Trail Youth Coffee Home in North Bend is so much more than a cafe

When Tonya Guinn was walking with some friends along the Rainier trail back in 2013, she was taken aback by what she saw along the way: words like “worthless” and “society’s trash” had been scrawled onto trees and benches. Many people in the area were homeless, battling substance abuse and facing other challenges under a dark cloud of despondency and hopelessness. Still reeling from the death of her brother who had been tragically killed by a drunk driver struggling with opiate addiction, Guinn knew firsthand the devastation that substance abuse could cause, especially for young people; both her brother and the driver had been 20 years old. She decided soon after that she wanted to help.
